Okay, so. The event which inspired me to start this Substack has happened. Judith Butler gave a public talk in San Francisco. My housemate and a good friend of hers went down to take part in the protest, and I think he (the friend) was set to give a talk as well.
They got four women into the talk and at least one of them was chosen to ask a question. This petite Asian-American woman stood up and stated that she had been a lesbian all her life and wanted to know if she was allowed to have any place anymore that didn’t have penis in it.
The audience booed her.
Butler lectured her about how she was “allowed” to have penis-free space in her own house, but not anywhere in public and, further, that she has a “phobia” that she needs to deal with.
The audience cheered.
My housemate informs me that the woman was a fucking rockstar and took the abuse with dignity, but when she came outside to rejoin the protesters she was shaking.
Butler is in a same-sex relationship. The absolute fucking gall.
There is audio. I don’t know who all will be sharing it but I would look to Women’s Liberation Front, probably on their Facebook and Twitter, to see if it pops up. It’s going to get spread around, so it’ll probably show up elsewhere too. Please feel free to share it wherever you find it. NPR was there and I’m pretty sure they’ll pretend it didn’t happen.
